Banners & Large Format Printing: Choosing the Right Display for Your Business or Event

Banners and large format printing solve different display problems: attracting attention at an exhibition, promoting an offer at a shop, covering a long fence or presenting a portable message at a meeting. The right format depends on where it will stand, how often it will move, how it will be supported and how far away people will view it.
A pull-up banner, X banner and custom PVC banner may carry similar artwork, but they are not interchangeable. Comparing their hardware and intended use before designing helps avoid an awkward installation or a graphic prepared to the wrong dimensions.
Start with the display environment
First decide whether the display will be indoors, outdoors or moved between locations. Indoor exhibition graphics usually prioritise portability, a neat footprint and quick setup. Outdoor banners require a suitable support structure and finishing for the planned installation. Wind exposure, fixing points and site permission also matter.
Next, identify the main viewing distance. A message read from across a hall needs larger type and fewer details than a banner beside a reception desk. Decide on one primary action—visit a stand, scan a code, ask about a service or remember a brand—then make that action visually dominant.
You can compare the current formats in Banners & Large Format.
Pull-up banners: compact, self-contained displays
A pull-up banner stores the graphic inside an aluminium cassette. At the venue, the user places the base on a level indoor surface, connects the support pole and raises the print into position. After use, the graphic retracts into the base for transport and storage.
Ellesi’s Econo Pull Up Banner uses an 850 × 2000 mm visible graphic, a lightweight economy cassette with stabilising feet and a carry bag. It is positioned for retail promotions, reception areas, conferences, launches and occasional exhibitions.
The Deluxe Pull Up Banner uses the same visible graphic size but has a heavier premium cassette. It is the stronger choice when the display will be used frequently or when a more substantial presentation base matters. Both include a full-colour lay-flat graphic and tool-free setup.
Choose between them according to frequency and presentation needs rather than artwork size alone. Neither product should be treated as a substitute for a banner engineered for an exposed outdoor position.
X banners: a lightweight tension-frame option
An X Banner Stand uses a flexible rear frame to tension a PVC graphic from four reinforced eyelet corners. The supporting frame remains visible from the side and rear; that is part of the design. It packs down into a carry bag and does not use a retractable cassette.
The live product offers 60 × 160 cm, 80 × 180 cm and 120 × 200 cm formats. Select the size before preparing artwork because each option has different proportions. X banners work well where low weight and quick temporary display are priorities, such as retail campaigns, presentations and exhibition stands.
Compared with a pull-up, the graphic is separate from the frame and held under tension at the corners. Consider the visible eyelets and frame when deciding whether the look suits the venue.
PVC banners: flexible custom sizing
A Custom Size PVC Banner is useful for shop fronts, events, promotions, fences and general indoor or outdoor display. The live configurator accepts a finished width and height in millimetres and offers optional eyelets with selectable spacing.
Unlike a portable stand, a custom banner relies on the planned support or fixing method. Measure the installation area, confirm where the fixings can go and keep important copy away from edges, eyelets and any finishing areas. Installation hardware and on-site installation are not automatically included unless stated separately.
Mesh banners are another live custom-size option in the category. Their construction differs from standard PVC, so do not assume the two materials have identical appearance, wind behaviour or suitability. Confirm the site conditions and product specification before ordering.
Fence wraps and long promotional runs
A long fence display is often described as a fence wrap. The important questions are the total run, panel divisions, fence construction, fixing method and exposure. A single continuous visual may need to be divided into manageable sections for production and installation.
Measure each section instead of relying only on an overall estimate. Note gates, posts, changes in height and areas that must remain visible. For unusual dimensions, specialist finishing or installation requirements, request a quote with photographs and measurements.
Choosing size and planning the artwork
Size should follow the available space and viewing distance. For portable displays, use the exact standard graphic dimensions. For custom banners, confirm the finished width and height as well as the proportions of the artwork. Enlarging a narrow design to fill a wide banner can cause cropping or empty areas.
Good large-format artwork usually has:
- one clear headline;
- a logo with enough surrounding space;
- a short supporting message;
- a simple call to action;
- high-contrast type and background colours;
- high-resolution photographs at output scale; and
- important content kept clear of edges and hardware.
Prepare the file at the ordered proportions, use high-quality assets and check every telephone number, date and web address. Ellesi’s live display products allow print-ready upload, send-later artwork or design assistance. If a designer is helping, provide the selected product and size before layout begins.

Frequently asked questions
Which portable banner is easiest to store?
Pull-up graphics retract into their cassette and both live Ellesi pull-up options include a carry bag. X banners also pack into a bag, but their graphic connects separately to the tension frame.
Can a pull-up banner be used outdoors?
The live Econo and Deluxe descriptions position them on level indoor surfaces. For an outdoor requirement, choose a product and fixing method specifically suited to the site rather than assuming portable indoor hardware will be stable.
Can I order a non-standard banner size?
Yes. The custom PVC banner accepts customer-entered dimensions within its configured limits. Use the quote form for unusually large sizes or specialised finishing.
