Chromadeck Signs: Why They Work Well for Outdoor Business Signage

Framed outdoor metal business sign with aluminium angle edging

Chromadeck signs are widely used for business identification, advertising, safety information and directions because they combine a coated-steel face with full-colour print. They can be produced as a straightforward wall panel or supported by a frame for larger and more exposed applications. Understanding those options helps you specify a sign that fits the site instead of treating every metal board as the same product.

What Ellesi means by a Chromadeck sign

Ellesi’s current Chromadeck range uses 0.6 mm Chromadeck sheet. The coated steel provides a smooth surface for crisp logos, colours, text and practical information. The sign face is produced with full-colour printing, so a business can use its established visual identity rather than being limited to one-colour lettering.

The range includes standard dimensions for convenient online configuration and a custom-size route for projects that do not fit those options. Product pages such as the Chromadeck Business Sign Board are designed around real business applications rather than a generic blank panel.

Three construction options

Chromadeck sheet board

The simplest format is the printed 0.6 mm sheet. It is suitable when the panel can be fixed to a sound, continuous surface that supports it appropriately. A flat sheet keeps the product lighter and more economical than a framed sign.

With a steel frame

Ellesi’s framed option uses a rear support frame made from 25 × 25 × 1.6 mm square-steel tubing on the current Chromadeck range. The printed sheet is riveted to that support. A frame adds rigidity and defined fixing points, which can be useful on larger signs or where the installation does not provide continuous backing.

Steel frame with aluminium angle edging

This option adds 25 × 25 × 2.5 mm aluminium angle around the perimeter of the framed sign. The edging provides a neat finished border and protects the visual edge. It is offered with the steel frame, not as a substitute for the frame.

These choices affect price, weight, packed dimensions and installation. Decide on the construction before arranging transport or approving the final artwork.

Where Chromadeck works well

Coated-steel signage suits many ongoing outdoor business needs:

  • shop-front and building identification;
  • boundary-wall advertising and property signs;
  • factory, warehouse and workshop signs;
  • parking, entrance and delivery instructions;
  • construction-site and contractor boards; and
  • safety, warning and access messages.

For street-facing retail premises, the Chromadeck Shop Front Sign provides a dedicated starting point. Industrial sites can use products such as the Chromadeck Factory Sign or directional and parking variants while keeping materials and visual styling consistent.

A single material does not solve the whole signage problem. The sign still needs readable artwork, a suitable size, sensible placement and sound installation. An exposed freestanding structure requires a different installation assessment from a panel fixed against a masonry wall.

Artwork and finishing decisions

Prepare artwork at the same proportions as the selected sign. Supply a vector logo where possible and keep essential text away from edges, rivets and possible panel joins. Full-colour printing can reproduce photographs and gradients, but strong contrast and simple copy usually perform better at outdoor viewing distances.

Ellesi’s current custom Chromadeck products allow customers to upload production-ready artwork, send it after ordering or request design assistance. Optional clear lamination is available on parts of the range and is intended to help protect the printed face. Confirm the selected product’s options rather than assuming every configuration includes the same finish.

Transport, installation and care

A metal sign is heavier than a lightweight Correx board, and a framed sign adds more weight and depth. Large formats need suitable packing to protect corners and the printed surface. Before ordering, check whether courier delivery is practical for the size or whether collection or a custom delivery arrangement is preferable.

Use fixings appropriate to the wall or structure, sign weight and exposure. Confirm cable and pipe locations before drilling. Very large or elevated signs may require a qualified installer and a site-specific structural assessment. Installation hardware is not automatically included unless the product or quotation says so.

Keep the face clean with a method appropriate to the print and finish, and inspect fixings periodically. Avoid abrasive tools that can scratch the printed surface. If the surrounding wall or structure deteriorates, address the support rather than relying on the sign panel to bridge the problem.

Frequently asked questions

Is Chromadeck the same as ACM?

No. Chromadeck is coated steel. ACM is a layered aluminium-composite panel. Both can produce rigid printed signs, but their construction, weight and handling differ.

Must I choose a standard size?

No. The standard sizes make common requirements easy to configure, while custom dimensions can be quoted when the site needs a different format.

Should every large sign be framed?

A frame can add useful support, but the right construction depends on the dimensions, backing surface, wind exposure and installation. Share site details before deciding.
